Captain McCurdy was awarded the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.

Captain McCurdy was the co-pilot of a C-47 Skytrain transport assigned to Headquarters Squadron, Haneda Air Base, Japan. On July 27, 1950, his aircraft crashed into the ocean about 64 miles southwest of Tokyo, killing three on board.
