Between May 24-26, 2025, American Battle Monuments Commission commemorated Memorial Day with ceremonies at its 26 cemeteries across the globe, including Brookwood American Cemetery, Netherlands American Cemetery and Cambridge American Cemetery honoring U.S. military personnel who sacrificed their lives defending freedom.
In 1992, an inscription was approved to be added to the American Battle Monuments Commission West Coast Memorial to recognize the Merchant Mariners who lost their lives off the Pacific coast in World War II. For unknown reasons, the addition to the memorial was never completed, but on May 22, 2025, National Maritime Day, that oversight was rectified.
On June 6, 2025, the world will pause to honor the 81st anniversary of D-Day, one of the most pivotal moments in modern history. The American Battle Monuments Commission’s Normandy American Cemetery will hold a ceremony to commemorate the deeds of the U.S. armed forces and its allies at 11 a.m. CET with U.S. and French dignitaries as well as veterans’ associations. The ceremony is open to the public.
